Abstraction is an inclusive and catholic art form embracing multiple ways of seeing and being. This is why, when talking about it, definition is a tricky business – but also why it embodies hope. This particular language of civilisation

has become hard to pin down, it eschews description and stereotyping; it will not be subdued to formulae.

So how to say something, how to consider something, without pinning it down or confining it, without staring it in the face and asking, what manner of thing are you? An attempt at finding
an essence here is never going to be straightforward. And it certainly isn’t in Frank Kent’s case.
