Tess Jaray will participate in the 2023 Gwangju Biennale, South Korea's foremost contemporary art biennial. The theme for this year's edition is soft and weak like water, and Artistic Director Sook-Kyung Lee has selected six of Jaray's 1980s paintings to be exhibited. soft and weak like water takes its inspiration from a chapter of Dao De Jing which speaks of water’s capacity to embrace contradictions and paradoxes.
