Tess Jaray, Cadence, 1986
The work of Tess Jaray and Paul de Monchaux converges in Karsten Schubert London’s Artissima online booth.
Tess Jaray (b. 1937, Vienna) and Paul de Monchaux (b. 1934, Montreal) met for the first time at the Slade School of Fine Art at the end of the 1950s, where for a brief period their courses overlapped. Since then, they have maintained a close friendship, exchanging ideas on art and architecture during a long discourse of letters and emails.
Part of Artissima’s Monologue/Dialogue section, our online booth looks back at Jaray’s and De Monchaux’s work from the 1980s and 1990s. The visual conversations between the works bring to light shared ideas about abstraction in a balance of contrasts between their respective media and their mutual interest in architecture.
In December, Tess Jaray’s 1986 painting Cadence will be exhibited in Turin at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAM). It has been selected for GAM, a modernist building, by Artissima curators for a series of physical exhibitions across Turin's leading museums and galleries.
