Tess Jaray's Aleppo series is the focal point for the artist's solo exhibition opening this week at Marc Straus in Manhattan. This body of work was inspired by Jaray's trip to the city of Aleppo in Syria in the late 1990s, where she was fascinated by the contrast created by light and dark coloured stones that comprise the arches of the city's historic mosques. Each work consists of two or more panels, their centre edges meeting with laser-cut zigzags that not only reference the architecture that inspired Jaray, but also bring to mind internal disjuncture and fragility.
