Alchemy: Artefacts Reimagined is a travelling solo-exhibition of new work by Ann-Marie James. As part of her residency with the Wessex Partner Museums, James was invited to explore the collections of Wiltshire, Salisbury, Poole and Dorset Museums to create series of works in response to the objects she encountered. Alchemy opens at Salisbury Musuem on Saturday, 21 September.
James's Archer series is made in response to the Salisbury Museum's Late Neolithic grave of the Amesbury Archer, who is thought to have been a metalworker of high social standing. James made line drawings of two arrowheads found in the burial, from which she produced rubber stamps in a variety of sizes. She built the composition in this series first through using the stamps with white and gold ink, then working into the composition of each work with acrylic and 24ct gold leaf.
