This major sculpture employed for the last time some of the artistic strategies that had made Flanagan’s reputation as one of the leading sculptors of the 1960s and 70s. Built Like a Tree, Flows Like a River draws upon the geography and history of Lyon, one of only three towns in Europe to be located at the confluence of three rivers: the Rhône, the Saône and their combined path. Exhibited just once, at the exhibition for which it was commissioned: Europe 80 in Lyon, the sculpture’s creation was documented in the accompanying exhibition catalogue.
