Frieze Art Fair 2016

Karsten Schubert and Thomas Dane Gallery present two of Michael Landy’s seminal installations of the 1990’s this year at Frieze.  Split over the week, the opening days will be dedicated to his exhibition ‘Market’ first shown at Building One in London’s East End in 1990. Appropriating minimalist forms of the everyday, Landy filled the space with market stalls, bread crates and astro turf- the familiar pavement displays of Britain’s corner shops. This presentation will provide a very rare chance to see elements from Landy’s original work.

‘Scrapheap Services’, first shown in 1995 and 1996 at the Tate and Chisenhale Galleries will make up the second presentation at Frieze this year. Part installation and part performance, the work documents the activities of a fictitious social-cleansing company in the business of disposing of people.  Reflecting the colour schemes and image themes of Local Authority branding, the work highlights our own complicity in assigning value to the lives of people. Originally set against the backdrop of recession and Thatcher-era Britain this work is as relevant today as is was then.

Michael Landy trained at Loughborough College of Art and Goldsmiths College , London. His work was included in ‘Sensation’ at the Royal Academy of Art: an exhibiton of Young British Artist’s from the Saatchi Collection and he was appointed the Eranda Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy Schools in 2014.
