'Nature has always beenrecorded by artists, from pre-historic cave paintings to 20th century landscape photography. I to wanted to make nature the subject of my work, but in new ways. I started working outside using natural materials like grass and water, and this evolved into the idea of making a sculpture by walking.' Richard Long 2000
Born in Bristol in 1945 Richard Long studied art at the West of England College of Art and subsiquently St Martins, London. He made his first sculpture by walking in 1967. Early on Long established himself as an international artist with early exhibitions in Dusseldorf, Paris, Milan and New York. To create his art long walks hundreds of miles for days on end; often over the harshest terrain. His walks have taken him as far a field as Nepal and Japan and the plains of Africa, Mexico and Bolivia.
